Longtime Autoweek publisher Dutch Mandel took his own personal checkered flag at the end of 2016. After 32 years at the magazine -- owned by Crain Communications, publisher of Automotive News -- seven automakers and NASCAR didn't let Mandel leave Detroit without a proper send-off.
Automakers, NASCAR surprise Mandel in Autoweek
Fiat Chrysler, Nissan, Ford, Toyota, Infiniti, General Motors, Mazda and NASCAR honored Mandel with full-page tributes in the latest Autoweek. Even more tributes were posted to Mandel's Facebook page.
A surprised Mandel wrote on Facebook: "I don't know what to say. For the first time in a long while I'm speechless. And humbled. This is the first I've seen this! Wow. Thank you. Thank you, all. #Blessed"
No specifics yet on Mandel's plans. He says he is "rebooting" and will soon launch "Dutch 2.0" from a new home in South Carolina.
