TO THE EDITOR:
We don't need to wait for autonomous cars to make us safer from texting and driving ("Action on distraction," Feb. 20).
This problem could be solved almost overnight with a very simple technology between the car and the phone that detects when the car is moving and the phone is on and automatically locks out the screen from texting or doing anything that requires touching the phone.
It would be no different than how navigation screens don't allow entries when the car is moving.
I believe the only reason we don't have this technology already is that the telecommunications industry cares more about selling data than saving lives. This is not rocket science!
